wash me, and I will be whiter than snow. (Psalm 51:7)
What did I find there, you ask?
Well, at first, it appeared to be only a pile of filth and refuse. But as I slowly washed off each individual piece, tiny slivers of color began to appear. Then, as dirt and stains were painstakingly removed from each of the fragments, they were revealed as unique pieces of unexplored beauty in a yet-to-be completed puzzle.
I cleaned all the pieces until they were completely spotless. Finally, it was time to begin assembling each one where only I knew they truly belonged. It is a tricky process, because some of the parts would change shape as I worked them. Only when the final shape of each piece was revealed, could I place it where it was meant to be in the overall picture.
It took just a moment to complete the puzzle – a mere vapor in time that humans consider a ‘lifetime’. But at the end of this lifetime, the puzzle will finally be complete, and what it will show is the precious work of art that I always knew was there.
After all, I created it.
---
We are each an incomplete and in-process work of art – only the Master can reveal our true selves.
For you created my inmost being;
you knit me together in my mother’s womb.
I praise you because I am fearfully and wonderfully made;
your works are wonderful,
I know that full well.
My frame was not hidden from you
when I was made in the secret place,
when I was woven together in the depths of the earth.
Your eyes saw my unformed body;
all the days ordained for me were written in your book
before one of them came to be. (Psalm 139:13-16)
