My family and I recently took a trip to Gatlinburg, TN with some good friends. While we were there, we went to 'WonderWorks'. Among the many fascinating science-based games and exhibits, they had a cylindrical tube with a sign above it. According to the sign, the tube was filled with 2 million colored beads. One, and only one, of the 2 million beads was purple. The challenge was to use the handle to turn the cylinder, moving the beads around, and to find the single purple bead buried amongst all the others.
I slowly turned the cylinder around and around, looking all through it, but never found the purple bead... I eventually realized that it would not only be very hard to find, but that the odds of me finding it before the place closed for the evening were, well, about 2 million-to-1!
It reminded me of a statistical comparison I read years ago about the odds of one person fulfilling all the messianic prophecies of the Old Testament (i.e. the things the Old Testament prophets said would happen to, or be done by, their Messiah). I don't remember the specific odds, but I do remember that they made 2 million-to-1 sound like great.
However, the comparison they provided to try and explain how improbable it would be for anyone to actually fulfill all of the prophecies - that I remember:
Imagine the entire state of Texas filled two-feet deep in silver coins. One, and only one, gold coin is placed somewhere in the midst of this mass of silver coins. You are blindfolded and asked to go into this Texas-sized pile of silver coins, and on your first try, reach down and pull out the single gold coin.
You are about as likely to do that, as it would be to fulfill all the prophecies that were made about the coming Messiah. Point being, it's basically impossible.
Yet, that is exactly what Jesus did! No other person in history can say that!
But, not only did Jesus fulfill the Messianic prophecies against all odds, but he did so many other signs and wonders that... well, I guess I can let the Apostle John sum it up:
Jesus did many other things as well. If every one of them were written down, I suppose that even the whole world would not have room for the books that would be written. -- John 21:25
