Funny thing is, sometimes we don’t get what we bargain for though. Last year, for example, we bought what was labeled as ‘cherry tomato’ plants, and they produced huge tomatoes! In God’s economy, however, we always...ALWAYS... reap what we planted.
Do not be deceived, God is not mocked; for whatever a man sows, that he will also reap. For he who sows to his flesh will of the flesh reap corruption, but he who sows to the Spirit will of the Spirit reap everlasting life. (Galatians 6:7-8)
It really all depends on the seed, doesn’t it? I can’t plant corn and wonder why I didn’t get carrots! You must sow carrots if you want to grow carrots. This seems obvious and simple when talking about your garden – why should we not expect the same result when talking about life and love?
Do we sow anger and expect kindness in return? Do we sow gossip and expect to receive trust? No - we must sow love, if we want love to grow.
Paul finishes his brief lesson on sowing and reaping:
And let us not grow weary while doing good, for in due season we shall reap if we do not lose heart. Therefore, as we have opportunity, let us do good to all, especially to those who are of the household of faith. (Galatians 6:9-10)
If you plant your garden with good seed, but do not tend it - never giving it water or pulling out the weeds - your garden will not produce a good harvest. You must not grow weary; you must not lose heart!
Do not start being kind to someone and then give up right away if they do not reciprocate. Be kind, and regardless of what you get in return, be kind still. Who knows what seeds are being planted by others in this person’s life? The garden of their soul may be infested with weeds and brambles - yours may be the only good seed to come into their garden today!
Finally, Paul says that while we should “do good to all”, we should be especially kind and giving to our brothers and sisters in Christ. For, if you cannot sow kindness and good seed to your own family, what kind of seed will you sow to strangers?
Now, let’s go out and sow the Good Seed, and let the Master Gardener work His miracles in this land!
