People will love only themselves and their money. They will be boastful and proud, scoffing at God, disobedient to their parents, and ungrateful. They will consider nothing sacred. They will be unloving and unforgiving; they will slander others and have no self-control. They will be cruel and hate what is good. They will betray their friends, be reckless, be puffed up with pride, and love pleasure rather than God. They will act religious, but they will reject the power that could make them godly. (2 Timothy 3:2-5)
This could very well be describing the world around us right now. What is particularly interesting is that this is describing a time near the end of days. This is how the Apostle Paul began this section:
You should know this, Timothy, that in the last days there will be very difficult times. (2 Timothy 3:1)
“Difficult times” is an apt description of our world today. What should we expect as followers of Christ, during these dark days ahead?
Yes, and everyone who wants to live a godly life in Christ Jesus will suffer persecution. But evil people and impostors will flourish. They will deceive others and will themselves be deceived. (2 Timothy 3:12-13)
And how are we to avoid being counted among those who are deceived to follow these evil people?
But you must remain faithful to the things you have been taught. (2 Timothy 3:14)
We must study and understand the teachings from the Word of God. This is where Truth is found – this is how we learn to be a light in the darkness, and how to do our part in bringing others into the light.
Read, study, pray – I can’t say how close we are to the end, but the formula hasn’t changed. We are to be about our Father’s business!
