and examine the mind,
to reward each person according to their conduct,
according to what their deeds deserve.” (Jeremiah 17:10)
This verse came up recently in a daily devotional… I supposed that someone thought this would be an encouragement, but to me it is terrifying. “According to what their deeds deserve”...Yikes! I’ll take a hard pass on getting what I deserve and instead accept Jesus and His Grace, thank you!
What I deserve based on my actions is nothing less than separation from God and an eternity of torment. I have failed miserably in meeting God’s Holy Standard of life. I have broken His commandments, failed to glorify Him as He deserves, and lived a life of selfishness.
This is why the only way I can see His Kingdom is to accept the sacrifice of His Son, who loved me so much that He left His Throne, came down here, and did what only He could do to make salvation available to me.
Jesus has done this. It has nothing to do with me getting what I deserve, and everything to do with His Grace. And what He did for me was also done for you and everybody. Even 'those people' who we look at and judge for ourselves are 'undeserving'... i.e. just like us.
The fact is – none of us deserved it… God knew we did not and could not earn our way to Him, so He sent His Son to come down here and pull us out of the mud of our own desires and wash us clean.
Since we have now been justified by his blood, how much more shall we be saved from God’s wrath through him! (Romans 5:9)
