Talk about good news! This is what I need to hear… In the Old Testament, they might kill a sacrificial lamb once a day, or on special occasions. In my life (I’m sorry to say), I am asking forgiveness sometimes multiple times through a single day. I can be in the middle of singing a worship song and have a sinful thought cross my mind at the same time. Or helping a brother or sister in need, and at the same time be jealous, lustful, angry, etc.
Just as my prayers to God are to be constant - keeping a conversation going with Him throughout the day – so my appeals for forgiveness happen throughout the day. In the moment, when my thoughts or actions are bringing forth sin, I need a Savior that will forgive each time I realize my sin, repent, and turn back to Him.
I’m not saying it’s good to just keep sinning as if it doesn’t matter, and neither is Jesus. Notice the important words of ‘return’ and ‘repent’. This means it’s not just willfully and repetitively sinning and saying ‘forgive me’ like it’s no big deal. There must be true recognition of repentance of the sin.
But the good news – the great news – is even if it’s multiple times through the day that I beg forgiveness and truly turn to Him - He forgives!
