It seems the culture around us is already here... Our sports stadiums and shopping malls are packed on Sunday, while our churches slowly die out. We are a consumer-friendly people addicted to self-gratification.
Paul continues his description of the people of the last days:
They will be boastful and proud, scoffing at God, disobedient to their parents, and ungrateful. They will consider nothing sacred. (2 Timothy 3:2b)
Our culture is becoming intolerant of the Christian worldview. There is nothing sacred to many except the lie of political correctness, and that changes as often as the weather.
Continuing from Paul’s letter to his protégé Timothy:
They will be unloving and unforgiving; they will slander others and have no self-control. They will be cruel and hate what is good. They will betray their friends, be reckless, be puffed up with pride, and love pleasure rather than God. (2 Timothy 3:3)
Social media is a haven of some of the most hate-filled rhetoric imaginable; politicians and newsrooms consistently aim to polarize one group against another, while at the same time swimming in the muck of their own licentiousness. Pleasure rules in the people’s hearts; wrong is right; and there seems to be no end in sight.
Now more than ever, the people of God need to show themselves; even if it means we are putting ourselves in harm’s way. It’s easy to get angry at others, but we really need to show them the love of Christ before it’s too late.
Paul soon comes to the heart of the matter for those that follow Christ:
All Scripture is God-breathed and is useful for teaching, rebuking, correcting and training in righteousness, so that the servant of God may be thoroughly equipped for every good work (2 Timothy 3:1-17)
While the world goes crazy, we must be people of the Book! Only then are we prepared to be the salt and light this world so badly needs.
