A newborn baby is incredibly selfish. Newborns don’t think about the right thing to do, nor do they have patience. They simply know they are hungry, thirsty, or uncomfortable in some other way, and want to be made comfortable.
Newborn Christians also are not going to act the same as mature Christians – or more accurately stated, ‘mature’ Christians should definitely not continue to act like newborn brothers and sisters!
There is a learning process that needs to happen in both. As a baby slowly can be trained away from selfish desires, so a new creation in Christ has a process of growth that must happen. If a child never learns beyond it’s first year of life, we would say he or she has stunted growth, either physically or mentally.
When we are born again as followers of Christ we must also grow. Think about it this way: If we were made perfect and sinless at the point of first becoming a Christian, there would be no room for growth, would there?
