How many times have we been here? Our world appears to be falling apart around us, and we wonder where God is. Why hasn’t He intervened to make things right? Here we are fighting for our lives, and Jesus is nowhere to be found - it appears He is just sleeping right through it…
Mark 4 speaks to all of us who have seen the Lord work in our lives and still fear the storms this world brings us. Think about it this way – what do you think would have happened if the disciples didn’t wake Jesus up? Would they have all drowned in the storm? I don’t think so – Jesus is the Master of the wind and the waves regardless of where He is or what He’s doing.
When Jesus woke up, he rebuked the wind and said to the waves, “Silence! Be still!” Suddenly the wind stopped, and there was a great calm. 40 Then he asked them, “Why are you afraid? Do you still have no faith?” (Mark 4:39)
The question isn’t whether Jesus cares or not, and it is not whether He is able to calm the storm. Will we be like these disciples and fight against the storms of life in our own strength until we finally give up and call out to Him? Or will we really trust Jesus to be the Master of the storm, even while it’s raging all around us?
The question then is not about the storm at all, but about our faith.
