You can look but not see, and you can hear but not listen. I imagine we can all point to a time when we didn’t really listen to someone and it came back to bite us. I know I can… Have you ever nodded and agreed with someone, without really understanding what they said?
When the Word of God is read, that’s good – but when it’s studied and understood, that is so much better! It’s much like putting food in your mouth and spitting it out, instead of chewing and swallowing. Both can give you a sense of the flavor - but only one will really nourish you!
It is critically important – life and death important – that we see, hear, and understand the messages of God. This is not some ‘drive-by’ conversation that we can just fake our way through! This is the very Word of Life, people! We must consume it and be nourished. Then we can have the knowledge and strength to do our jobs – which is to tell others!
How, then, can they call on the one they have not believed in? And how can they believe in the one of whom they have not heard? And how can they hear without someone preaching to them? (Romans 10:14)
