In this verse, Jesus is speaking to His Disciples. The ‘new treasures’ Jesus refers to are the teachings that He is bringing through His earthly ministry – in other words, the New Testament. The ‘old treasures’ are the law that they were currently versed in (the Old Testament).
When we become followers of Jesus Christ, we accept all of His Word. What we call the Old Testament was all these teachers knew of at the time. As they heard Jesus telling His parables and speaking the Good News to those who followed Him, they were learning how the old and new fit together to make a beautifully complete picture.
The Old Testament spoke of the Messiah to come – Jesus spoke as the Messiah. The teachers of the law knew the promises – Jesus fulfilled them before their eyes. As a homeowner has both old treasures (a photograph of loved ones who have passed) as well as new treasures (the young child sleeping in the other room), so do His followers share both of these types of treasures with those they encounter.
Share the treasures of God’s Holy Word with those around you, and follow your Risen King!
