The difference between this real hero and the ones typically depicted in books and movies is that David knew his courage, strength, and victories were not his own.
I am worn out from my groaning.
All night long I flood my bed with weeping
and drench my couch with tears. (Psalm 6:6)
That’s right, this amazing and courageous warrior cried out to God, with tears streaming down his face. He knew that it was only through God that the victories would come. This ‘manly man’ laid in bed weeping, calling out to Someone far greater and stronger than himself. And he knew that his tears were not in vain – his cries for help were answered!
The Lord has heard my cry for mercy;
the Lord accepts my prayer. (Psalm 6:9)
So while David may have been holding the sling or the sword, his faith was firmly rooted in his God. This is how he was victorious.
We may not be fighting against mighty warriors, but we are definitely in a great battle. And like David, our only hope of victory lies in the One who hears our cries and answers our heartfelt prayers.
