Who is the Word of God? Who is the Son of God? Of course, we would say Jesus is! So when Exodus says, “And the Lord said to Moses…” – is that not the Word of God? Is that not then also Jesus - the Son of God - speaking to Moses? He tells the people to prepare for something incredible to happen on the third day, and it did!
On the morning of the third day there was thunder and lightning, with a thick cloud over the mountain, and a very loud trumpet blast. Everyone in the camp trembled. Then Moses led the people out of the camp to meet with God, and they stood at the foot of the mountain. Mount Sinai was covered with smoke, because the Lord descended on it in fire. The smoke billowed up from it like smoke from a furnace, and the whole mountain trembled violently. As the sound of the trumpet grew louder and louder, Moses spoke and the voice of God answered him. (Exodus 16-19)
On the morning of the third day, the ‘voice’ (aka Word) of God descended the mountain, and spoke with Moses. Fast forward a few thousand years to another incredible ‘third day’:
But they found the stone rolled away from the tomb. Then they went in and did not find the body of the Lord Jesus. And it happened, as they were greatly perplexed about this, that behold, two men stood by them in shining garments. Then, as they were afraid and bowed their faces to the earth, they said to them, “Why do you seek the living among the dead? He is not here, but is risen! Remember how He spoke to you when He was still in Galilee, saying, ‘The Son of Man must be delivered into the hands of sinful men, and be crucified, and the third day rise again.’” (Luke 24:2-7)
On this even more important ‘third day’, the Word of God didn’t just descend a smoking mountain, but defeated death and the grave to give us all hope that we can follow Him into eternity. Yes, it was through the hands of ‘sinful men’ like you and I that Jesus met death. But it was completely and only through Him that death found defeat and life found victory!
