You and I are called to be honest witnesses. At the end of the day, this is the one thing that every single believer can do! And being a witness is a simple thing, really.
According to Merriam-Webster, this is the definition of a witness:
- to testify to
- to act as legal witness of
- to furnish proof of
- to have personal or direct cognizance of : see for oneself
So being a witness simply means to talk about what you have personal experience of. A witness is an important thing, because they act as the point of verification for those that did not experience it themselves:
I signed and sealed the deed of purchase before witnesses, weighed out the silver, and paid him. (Jeremiah 32:10)
So are we all supposed to walk around shouting in the streets about Jesus? I hope not! While there is some precedence of prophets being called to 'shout in the streets' with specific messages from God, it seems to me that we are called to be personal witnesses. Talk to people you meet; simply tell your friends and acquaintances what God has done in your life - that's what you can be an honest witness about. After all, believers in Christ are witnesses to the most important thing that could ever happen to anyone!
“God raised Jesus from the dead, and we are all witnesses of this. (Acts 2:32)
How am I a witness of the Resurrection? Because I have personal experience of Him living in me, and He cannot live in me if He is not alive!
‘There is forgiveness of sins for all who repent.’ You are witnesses of all these things. (Luke 24:47a-48)
How am I a witness of forgiveness? By experiencing His life-giving mercy in my own life!
So you see, we are only asked to 'Go' and 'Tell' what we know and have seen. We aren't asked to make up wild stories or exaggerate the facts - after all, who needs to do that when we are personal recipients and witnesses to an amazing miracle in our own lives?
Of course, the greatest and most trustworthy witness is Jesus, who is Truth personified!
He who is the faithful witness to all these things says, “Yes, I am coming soon!” Amen! Come, Lord Jesus! (Revelation 22:20)
Can I get a witness?
