On hearing this, Jesus said, “It is not the healthy who need a doctor, but the sick. But go and learn what this means: ‘I desire mercy, not sacrifice.’ For I have not come to call the righteous, but sinners.” (Matthew 9:10-13)
Broken things are ugly. Broken things cannot serve the purpose for which they were originally designed. You and I were born broken because of sin.
Surely I was sinful at birth,
sinful from the time my mother conceived me. (Psalm 51:5)
Like a car that leaves the factory in scattered pieces, we cannot serve our originally designed function. Our designed purpose can never be met until we are repaired. But we must also be in a state where we can be repaired.
What I mean is - you cannot perform heart surgery on someone when they are in a fetal position. You have to lay them out, open them up where it matters, and be ready to get messy. It is at this point that the surgeon can make real progress.
When we have broken spirits and crushed souls - when our hands are opened up and free of all the things we cling to – that is when the Great Physician can do His best work!
Let go of the things of this life, recognize your brokenness, and come to the only One who can make you who you were designed to be.
Create in me a pure heart, O God,
and renew a steadfast spirit within me. (Psalm 51:10)
