for theirs is the kingdom of heaven.” (Matthew 5:3)
When Jesus says ‘poor in spirit’, it also means to be broken in spirit. This is us admitting that we are completely weak and broken, and unable to do for ourselves what must be done for salvation. It is at this point of brokenness that we are open for the Master to come and put us together as only He can.
Beggars in ancient times would hold one hand out for money, and with the other hand cover their face in shame and unworthiness. We should come to God in this same way!
But when we do, He pours so much into us that we must hold out our other hand to try and contain it all, and it still is not enough! Holding out both our hands to the great Provider exposes all our shame to Him. It is at this point, where we admit that only by HIS GRACE and HIS MERCY can we be saved – that we are utterly incapable of standing before Him with our filthy rags of earthly deeds – that we make ourselves poor in spirit.
Then, through His unending goodness and mercy, He will make us beautiful through our faith in Him and what He has done.
