Let me ask you a question. Who is doing all the work in these verses from Jeremiah? God does it all! Notice that he does not say, “You will do this and then I will do that”, or ‘If you do this, then I will do that”. No – God realizes that we cannot save ourselves. It is true, that if it was left to us to save ourselves, we would truly be doomed.
Thanks be to God, that He works good toward us, even though we don’t deserve it. This is why, earlier in the book of Jeremiah, we hear these words:
“Let not the wise man glory in his wisdom,
Let not the mighty man glory in his might,
Nor let the rich man glory in his riches;
But let him who glories glory in this,
That he understands and knows Me,
That I am the Lord, exercising lovingkindness, judgment, and righteousness in the earth.
For in these I delight,” says the Lord.” (Jeremiah 9:23-24)
We should glory in the wonderful works of our Lord! And if we boast, we should boast only in the Lord, for He alone is worthy of our praise!
For by grace you have been saved through faith, and that not of yourselves; it is the gift of God, not of works, lest anyone should boast. (Ephesians 2:8)
