I wonder if Jesus ever gets tired of knocking on the door of our heart.
Here I am! I stand at the door and knock. If anyone hears my voice and opens the door, I will come in and eat with that person, and they with me. (Revelation 3:20)
Whenever I feel like God isn’t there for me, the issue tends to really be that I’m not answering His knock. Am I reading His Word; praying to Him; telling others about Him; honoring Him with my life decisions?
If I don’t do anything to have a relationship with God, why am I surprised when I don’t feel His presence? It’s not that He isn’t there - He is knocking on the door of a heart that nobody answers.
The fool says in his heart,
“There is no God.”
They are corrupt, and their ways are vile;
there is no one who does good.
God looks down from heaven
on all mankind
to see if there are any who understand,
any who seek God. (Psalm 53:1-2)
We must ask ourselves: If we don’t open the door and invite someone into our house, how can they live with us? And if we don’t speak to someone, how can we get to know them? If we don’t listen to what someone tells us, how can we blame them for what happens?
Are we blaming God for things that we aren’t letting Him help us with? Are we making our own decisions and then blaming Him when they don’t lead us where we want to be?
So, as the Holy Spirit says:
“Today, if you hear his voice,
do not harden your hearts (Hebrews 3:7-8a)
