As I drive to work, I see a man holding a sign that asks for money and says “God Bless You”. I wonder, did he write that on there because he is a believer, or because he thinks it improves his odds of finding a ‘sucker’ to give him some change? I keep driving, and soon have forgotten all about the man….
As the day winds down I scroll through Facebook, and come across some “friends” who have posted prayer requests…for fathers, mothers, brothers, sisters, husbands, wives, friends… Sometimes I keep going and sometimes I reply saying I’ll pray for them (it seems wrong and a bit morbid to hit the ‘Like’ button). I continue surfing until 10 minutes later when I realize I just wasted 10 minutes and have nothing to show for it, having forgotten nearly everything I saw…
As I get ready for bed, I pray for God to bless me and my family (as if He hasn’t already blessed me and mine more than we could ever possibly deserve), and maybe even go through the extended family – I don’t think to pray for the homeless man, the people affected by disasters, or the Facebook friends that asked for prayers. And I call myself a Christian?
Pray for one another, that you may be healed. The effective, fervent prayer of a righteous man avails much. (James 5:16b)
