This is a sobering statement from our Lord Jesus. He is not mincing words – it is stated plainly that this IS how God will treat us – no ‘if’, ‘maybe’, or ‘could’… But what exactly is He referring to when He says, “This is how…”?
Well, Jesus tells of a debtor who is forgiven a huge sum by the one he is in debt to, but who is then unwilling to forgive a fellow debtor that owes him far less.
We are debtors – every sin adds more to our account. I won't speak for you, but I know my account is certainly overburdened because of my many sins. So, when the One who I owe forgives me this massive debt, my gratitude should be as great as the debt that was erased.
But how grateful am I being if I won’t forgive another of a much lesser crime? If I have been forgiven a million sins by the One who created and can destroy my very soul, should I not forgive the sin – even an egregious sin – of a fellow traveler?
To put it another way: Is there any sin another human has done to me that even slightly compares to the multitude of terrible things I’ve done through the years that my Savior has completely wiped clean?
Jesus is clear - if we don’t forgive those who sin against us, we will be brought to task by our Master – the One who stands ready to forgive us of so very much!
