but they chose to rebel against him,
and they were finally destroyed by their sin. (Psalm 106:43)
This is such a sad verse! And even though the psalmist is referring to the Israelites, don’t you think the same holds true for us? God is merciful, and He wants none to perish!
The Lord is not slack concerning His promise, as some count slackness, but is longsuffering toward us, not willing that any should perish but that all should come to repentance. (2 Peter 3:9)
But even so, there is a time where our hearts become so hardened by our constant sin that He will finally turn away from us, or mor accurately, He will finally give us what we've been asking for - a life without Him. Then we are truly and irrevocably lost.
It is a dreadful thing to fall into the hands of the living God. (Hebrews 10:31)
Thank God that He is so patient and forgiving – I know that were it not for His mercy, I would certainly have been lost long ago. And the psalmist reminds us of this in the verses that followed:
Even so, he pitied them in their distress
and listened to their cries.
He remembered his covenant with them
and relented because of his unfailing love. (Psalm 106:44-45)
Again and again we fail, and again and again Grace is there. Oh, the unfailing love of our Lord and Savior!
