We are not perfect humans…. SURPRISE! I realize this may be a shock to you, but it’s true…. In fact, we cannot be perfect on this earth… and because Jesus was the perfect human, He set the standard for ‘normal’ humanity. The definition of ‘normal’ is as follows:
- conforming to the standard; usual; regular; natural.
Since Jesus established the standard for ‘normal’, that makes all of us… you guessed it – ABNORMAL. And you can probably guess this as well, but here is what ‘abnormal’ means:
- not normal, average, typical, or usual; deviating from a standard.
So, we are all ‘deviating from the standard’, who is seen in the Person of Christ. Part of what makes me ‘abnormal’ is the flesh that is steeped in sin from birth.
As it is, it is no longer I myself who do it, but it is sin living in me. (Romans 7:17)
Christ – as the only ‘normal’ human – had no sin.
For God made Christ, who never sinned, to be the offering for our sin, so that we could be made right with God through Christ. (2 Corinthians 5:21)
All I can say is, welcome to the club! The good news is that we can start working our way towards ‘normal’ by following Christ. In fact, that is the only way we can ever hope to be normal, because it will only be after this life is over and eternity begins that we can find our true and normal self. Until then, we must strive for what cannot be fully grasped.
Therefore if there is any encouragement in Christ, if there is any consolation of love, if there is any fellowship of the Spirit, if any affection and compassion, make my joy complete by being of the same mind, maintaining the same love, united in spirit, intent on one purpose. (Philippians 2:1-2)
