On the seventh day God had finished his work of creation, so he rested from all his work. (Genesis 2:2)
You may gather the food for six days, but the seventh day is the Sabbath. There will be no food on the ground that day.” (Exodus 16:26)
This seems to apply to us, and also to our property / land.
For six years you may plant your fields and prune your vineyards and harvest your crops, but during the seventh year the land must have a Sabbath year of complete rest. It is the Lord’s Sabbath. Do not plant your fields or prune your vineyards during that year. (Leviticus 25:3-4)
So, although I don’t think there is anything ‘magical’ about 2017 just because it ends with the number 7, it did make me think about the significance God puts on ‘7s’ in general. I started doing the math in our lives (mine and my families), and sure enough, we are due for a ‘Year of Sabbath’.
Our family went through a mildly cataclysmic event in 2009, which had us spending most of 2010 in recovery and recuperation. Over the years since then, through to the end of 2016, we have been on a steady path of rebuilding and growth - for both our family and our property. Therefore, we are calling this our families ‘year of contentment’.
This doesn’t mean we are sitting on our hands all year, and I’m not retiring (perhaps never at this rate). But we can enjoy the fruits of our labors, and take a break from the past several years of renovations. So for our family, 2017 is our year of rest, refreshment, and being content with where we find ourselves – in God’s blessings.
Is it time for you to reflect and find contentment? Is it time for you to let your land have a Sabbath? Find contentment in the Lord, and rejoice in His goodness!
