Well, I think the simple answer is that it’s just how life is – we can’t have all ‘ups’, because then even the ups have to be greater and greater or they will also feel like ‘downs’. I also feel that we humans are built around balance, so the ups are out of place unless there are downs to remind us of how great the ups are.
The key is to not let the downs rule your life. It is completely normal to have times when you feel euphoric, and times when you feel depressed, sad, or lonely. What to do when you are sad or discouraged? Well, as in all other things that really matter in this life, the Word of God gives us answers that work!
Read these verses from Psalm 42, and see what God tells us about how to address the times we feel low:
Why am I discouraged?
Why is my heart so sad?
I will put my hope in God!
I will praise him again--
my Savior and my God!
Now I am deeply discouraged,
but I will remember you. (Psalm 42:5-6)
I think the question is, where is your hope? If you remember the God that saves, and all the blessings that He pours out, you will go from ‘humdrum’ to beating the drum of rejoicing!
Life is full of ups and downs for everyone – it’s a question of how we respond to both that will determine our path, and whether we allow the things of this world to steal away the joy we have in our Lord and Savior. Rejoice in Him when things are good, and cling to Him through every situation -- and you will find the ups will far outweigh the downs!
