This is very sad. Christ could have remained with the Father in all His Glory. He would have never had to step down from His throne. He would have never had to argue with all of the stubborn people. He would have never had to give His life away.
But, this is also a source of great joy! For as Paul says in Romans; “But God demonstrates His own love toward us, in that while we were still sinners, Christ died for us.”
So yes, even though I wasn’t physically there to drive the nail through His hand, I just as surely am responsible for that nail as the man that held the hammer – and so are you. It is for this reason that Christ came, died, and rose again. Because He looks at you and I just as He looked at the man holding the hammer – not as a murderer, but as His beloved. Oh what a love!
In Him we have redemption through His blood, the forgiveness of sins, according to the riches of His grace… (Ephesians 1:7)
