“Everything is meaningless,” says the Teacher, “completely meaningless.” (Ecclesiastes 12:8)
It left him utterly empty and still seeking fulfillment. His final words tell the tale:
Here now is my final conclusion: Fear God and obey his commands, for this is everyone’s duty. (Ecclesiastes 12:13)
The story Jesus tells of the 'Prodigal Son' starts out similar – this young man is given a portion of his father’s wealth and goes on a spree much like Solomon – wine, women and song. The difference was that this man’s wealth was very soon gone, and he then found himself both materially and spiritually empty.
About the time his money ran out, a great famine swept over the land, and he began to starve. (Luke 15:14)
I will go home to my father and say, “Father, I have sinned against both heaven and you, and I am no longer worthy of being called your son.” (Luke 15:18)
Some people can have everything their hearts desire but come to the realization that they actually have nothing without God; others must come to the very end of themselves to finally realize they have nothing. Sadly, some never accept this at all.
You say, ‘I am rich. I have everything I want. I don’t need a thing!’ And you don’t realize that you are wretched and miserable and poor and blind and naked. (Revelation 3:17)
Whether we are rich or poor in the things of this world, we are all truly wretched, miserable, poor, blind and naked without God.
