In the past few weeks, I’ve seen people espousing God’s Word to try and justify a political position and/or point they are making. Many of these people, it seems, are not avid readers of God’s Word. They are stating as fact things that are mere conjecture based on their scant knowledge (or talking points given to them by someone else).
Whenever someone pulls out a bible verse to try and tell you how Jesus would vote, or which candidate God wants in office, you should be very skeptical. I don’t remember Jesus telling Pontius Pilate that he shouldn’t have his job.
When we go to the source (His Word), we find that Jesus tells us not how to vote, but how to love. Love those who we instinctively do not want to love. Love those who the world would say are not deserving of our love. And to do this the way He intended we must the One who said it. If we do that, we might just be able to represent Him in this fallen world, and stop making assumptions based on faulty logic.
We continually ask God to fill you with the knowledge of his will through all the wisdom and understanding that the Spirit gives, so that you may live a life worthy of the Lord and please him in every way (Colossians 1:9b-10a)
