It was ‘on the third day’ that the miraculous sacrifice made life possible for the child of Abraham – it was also ‘on the third day’ that Jesus rose to make life possible for all those who believe in Him.
And Abraham took the wood of the burnt offering and laid it on Isaac his son. (Genesis 22:6a)
The Son-Who-Would-Be-Sacrificed had to carry the very wood up the mountain that he would later be sacrificed on – as Jesus carried the wood up the hill that He would be sacrificed on.
Then Abraham looked up and saw a ram caught by its horns in a thicket. So he took the ram and sacrificed it as a burnt offering in place of his son. Abraham named the place Yahweh-Yireh (which means “the Lord will provide”). To this day, people still use that name as a proverb: “On the mountain of the Lord it will be provided.” (Genesis 22:13-14)
The Lord provided the sacrifice that returned life to the promised child Isaac – and Jesus is the sacrificial Lamb that returns life to all children that trust in His Promise.
The shadow of this Old Testament event clearly shows the New Testament Redemption story. The Word of God never fails to amaze.
