So when the woman saw that the tree was good for food, that it was pleasant to the eyes, and a tree desirable to make one wise, she took of its fruit and ate. She also gave to her husband with her, and he ate. Then the eyes of both of them were opened, and they knew that they were naked; and they sewed fig leaves together and made themselves coverings. (Genesis 3:6-7)
What fruit did Eve eat? Most children’s books (and most people it seems) think it was an apple, even though Genesis does not mention what type of fruit it was. Perhaps it’s some fruit that doesn’t even exist here, and we won’t see it again until we get to heaven.
I don’t know either, of course, but I think it might have been a fig. After all, in Genesis chapter 3, it says “they sewed fig leaves together and made themselves coverings”. Maybe they ate, immediately realized they were naked, and just grabbed leaves off the same tree the fruit came from!
And did you notice that after they ate the fruit, it says their eyes were opened? Opened to what?
Shame! They were opened to see that they were naked and ashamed. You see, there was no shame before sin. And it is true to this day – with sin comes shame!
“We lie down in our shame,
And our reproach covers us.
For we have sinned against the Lord our God” (Jeremiah 3:25a)
“O Lord, to us belongs shame of face, to our kings, our princes, and our fathers, because we have sinned against You.” (Daniel 9:8)
It is sad but true - we have all sinned and felt the shame overcome us. But thanks to our Lord and Savior, our sin can be taken away!
And you know that Jesus came to take away our sins, and there is no sin in him. (1 John 3:5)
He has removed our sins as far from us
as the east is from the west. (Psalm 103:12)
We have all sinned, and we have all experienced having our eyes 'opened' to the shame that follows. But thanks to the work of Jesus Christ, we can be cleansed of every sin – and with no sin there is no shame!
