I understand that when our Lord spoke this to His twelve friends, He meant so much more than working at a job that provides a service. Jesus is saying to serve one another – not for money, but out of love. However, isn’t it easy to forget or take for granted how often we are ‘served’ by others (whether they are being paid for it or not)?
I often travel for my job, and from the moment I leave my house, I am ‘served’ in one way or another (I am also often served at home - much more than I deserve!). It wasn’t my work that built and maintained the roads I drive on towards the airport (although my taxes certainly helped fund it!).
When I park my car, a driver in a shuttle bus picks me up (not literally) and delivers me close to the door of the airport. Once inside, I am served by the gate agents, and by the people working in the stores, restaurants, or lounges. There are people that serve me by cleaning the bathroom I use, and taking out the trash I throw away.
How often do I say “Thank you” to these people? How often do I thank God for them, or pray for them? Not often enough, of that I’m sure!
Go serve one another in love, so the world can see how different followers of Christ are in this world. But also remember to look around and notice all those who serve, whether out of love, duty, or some other reason. And if you have ever served me and I was remiss in expressing my gratitude, please accept my apologies.
Everyone matters - and those that serve us day-by-day certainly matter. Where would we be without the servers of the world? Thank the ones who serve you today – whether family, friend, or stranger - and remember to thank God for them too!
