Jesus was in perfect union and harmony with the Father throughout all eternity. But Jesus the Son made a choice to step down from His throne and be born as a human baby on this earth. His mission was to save mankind, and He had to become one of us to do it.
Jesus was the God-man, but on the cross, He had to perform the ultimate fulfillment of His mission. After leading a life without sin - making Himself the perfect and blameless Sacrifice that would be necessary – Jesus had our sins laid on Him. For that moment, when the sins of all mankind were on Him, the Father had to turn away from His Son.
In that moment, Jesus felt something that must have been much worse than the beatings, whippings, and crucifixion. He was truly alone, and in the most terrible and frightening moment ever to befall any human, Jesus cried out in anguish.
We will never be truly and completely alone unless we make a choice to forsake what Jesus went through for us. He experienced a horrendous separation from the Father for a moment, so we don’t have to experience that separation for eternity.
“Never will I leave you;
never will I forsake you.” (Hebrews 13:5)
