“Here I am! I stand at the door and knock. If anyone hears my voice and opens the door, I will come in and eat with that person, and they with me.”
Or maybe outside your door is a Lazarus needing help, as Jesus talks about in Luke:
“At his gate was laid a beggar named Lazarus, covered with sores and longing to eat what fell from the rich man’s table. Even the dogs came and licked his sores.” (Luke 16:20-21)
If you won’t share your blessings here with those in need, you may sadly find that there won’t be blessings for you to share later:
“But Abraham replied, ‘Son, remember that in your lifetime you received your good things, while Lazarus received bad things, but now he is comforted here and you are in agony.” (Luke 16:25)
The rich man had every material blessing – but his heart was void of mercy and compassion for the poor beggar right outside his door. Lazarus had nothing in this world except faith, hope, and love – yet he had true life in eternity while the rich man suffered.
Jesus is reminding us to keep our priorities straight! When it’s all said and done, if all you have left is faith in the Lord, hope for a better day ahead, and love for those you encounter, then you truly have everything you need.
