These gifts are things many of us would love to have. We feel instead perhaps that we’ve been shortchanged by not being physically beautiful, having deep intelligence, or what we consider a desired talent. But did you know that each of these can become a cross to bear?
Intelligence may keep us from seeking God’s higher wisdom.
For the wisdom of this world is foolishness in God’s sight. As it is written: “He catches the wise in their craftiness”; and again, “The Lord knows that the thoughts of the wise are futile.” (1 Corinthians 3:19-20)
Beauty of the flesh may become a crutch that will prevent us from capturing God's beauty within us.
For women who claim to be devoted to God should make themselves attractive by the good things they do. (1 Timothy 2:10)
Exceptional talents may tempt us to rely on our own abilities instead of accepting our weakness and trusting God.
That’s why I take pleasure in my weaknesses, and in the insults, hardships, persecutions, and troubles that I suffer for Christ. For when I am weak, then I am strong. (2 Corinthians 12:10)
When we trust in the Lord we realize that being meek, poor, and broken are better than living in our own strength, riches, beauty, and talents. We are to become the Bride of Christ, and there is none more beautiful on this earth or in eternity!
